The following service activities will be part of the Indian River County Day of Service on April 24, 2010. 

Children’s Home Society -  delivers social services designed to protect children at risk of abuse, neglect or abandonment; to strengthen and stabilize families; to help young people break the cycle of abuse and neglect; and to find safe, loving homes for children.

 

Project: We would like to erect a Picnic Table with attached benches for the New Youth Transition Center in the outdoor picnic area, with a gas grill, (we already have the gas line). Or to paint a used chest that will go in our conference room at the center and paint and attach mail boxes for each of the apartment units (9).

 

 

The Sun Up Center of Indian River – Our Mission is to provide programs, services and residential opportunities to individuals with Special Needs.

 

Project: We need mulch around all of our trees, shrubs etc.  There are 10 trees, a row of shrubs along the side of our portico, and a long row of shrubs running the length of our building. We also need the exterior of the building generally cleaned up.

 

 

Male Breast Cancer Awareness (John W. Nick Foundation) – educates the world about the risk of breast cancer in men, and to provide preventive and reactive measures to breast cancer through education and research.

Project: Assemble booklets, stuff brochures into envelopes, label them, and affix stamps for direct mailing to promote male breast cancer awareness and early detection. Work will be done between 8:30 and noon at Community Church.

The Samaritan Center - an interfaith non-profit organization providing shelter and support for homeless families of Indian River County. Families enter our 12-18 month program to develop a permanent solution to their homeless situation. Samaritan Center provides housing, employment, counseling, financial management, job training, transportation, liaison with other agencies, parenting classes and case management services to prepare them to live independently.

 

Project: This project includes playground equipment removal, remove and replace walkway brickwork, mulching and planting flowers in our Memorial Garden, flowerbeds and around the trees, shed cleanup and organization.

 

 

Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach - vision is to instruct and disciple women in a safe environment so that they may live fruitful lives with changed attitudes about themselves, which in turn will cause them to be dedicated to God and others. We also train leaders to take this same healing message to other ministries and environments.  

 

Project: Repair fencing and replace chain link posts along border of property, clean out growth along the fence. Power wash concrete walkways, porches and three buildings.

 

 

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex – provides protected habitat for native plants and wildlife through habitat restoration and land acquisition projects. Currently it manages 5,400 acres of land, pieces of which are retired citrus groves undergoing habitat restoration.

 

Project: To support its ongoing habitat restoration efforts, the Refuge would like to build a greenhouse for the growing and propagation of native plants. Volunteers will construct the greenhouse, install its irrigation system, and attach its screen. The refuge will provide training for the tools if necessary.  There will also be an educational component at the end of the day with refuge staff offering a one-hour guided tour of The Centennial Trail at the Refuge.  

 

 

Homeless Family Center - provides Emergency and Transitional Shelter Programs to families of the Treasure Coast. Homeless Family Center provides basic needs, case management, employment services, classes on life skills, budgeting, parenting and employment are provided. 

 

Project: We are asking for mulch for the playground area, the butterfly garden and around the building. 

Old Macedonia Church - This is the first African American Church in the area that was built in the 1920s.  Not only used for heritage, it is also used for the Dr. Martin Luther King committee headquarters.

Project:  Repairs including replacing back door, repair leaking roof, replace rotton boards around the building exterior, touch up paint.
